I'm going to talk about how different changes within a practice can lead to reduced production. I'll also mention some basic practice management things that are often overlooked when trying to figure out what's going on. Basically, if a practice isn't constantly improving, it'll start to decline. Some examples of internal issues that can cause this decline include changes with the doctor, staff, patients, or the systems used in the practice.
Module 2: Internal Problems
Internal problems within a practice can often stem from issues that the doctor or staff have suspected for some time but haven't acted on. One common problem is the practice's schedule not aligning with patient demand, resulting in fewer patients coming in. Additionally, the attitude and behavior of staff can also have a negative impact on patient demand. Even small decisions, such as not being open during certain hours or increasing prices, can lead to patients not referring others to the practice. It's important to be aware of these internal problems and address them in order to maintain a successful practice.
Module 3: The Importance of the Telephone
The importance of the telephone in a practice cannot be overstated. When a practice loses a staff member, the workload on the lead telephone receptionist increases and this can lead to problems with new patients. The key to solving this problem is to address it before it becomes a problem and to realize that patients are often hypersensitive to the staff's reaction. It's important to remember that the default setting of patients is that they are sensitive to the staff's reaction and that the staff must remain conscious of their need to reach out to these patients on the phone.

There are three main areas where issues can come up in a medical practice. These include within the practice itself, outside of the practice, and with the attitudes of the doctor or staff members. Additionally, sometimes a doctor may have an overconfident attitude and break some important rules, causing patients to go elsewhere. The important thing is to figure out what's causing any problems and whether they're coming from within or outside of the practice. A well-managed practice with a strong marketing strategy can do really well, but if a doctor starts to feel like things are going to take a turn for the worse, even if their concerns aren't founded, it can cause the practice to start struggling.

When a practice experiences a downturn, it's important to look outside the practice for the cause. One potential cause is peak demand times, where successful practices know how and when to add staff and equipment. Big practices don't typically lose production during these times because they are usually underdeveloped and have a high case average. However, when a practice is overbuilt and experiences a reduction in patient flow, it can lead to a noticeable reduction in production. This can be diagnosed by looking for an all-time production high followed by a major downturn. To successfully weather these challenges, practices should focus on overbuilding and finding ways to sustain prolonged exposure to toxic practice policies.

It is important to address any issues that may be hindering the growth of your practice, such as a hole in the practice bucket or outside challenges. Your expectations for practice building efforts should be realistic and take into account the normal challenges of practice building. A good approach is to closely monitor practice statistics, hold staff accountable, and strive to become a referral-driven practice. It is important to not give up on practice development efforts and to actively work towards creating and maintaining a successful practice. Additionally, focusing on providing great service to patients can lead to increased referrals and a sense of fulfillment in your life and practice.
